Tar:

The particulate matter remaining from the burning of tobacco and/or other organic material. The chemical composition of tar is thus a function of what is being burned.

Not all tar is equal.

The chemical composition of tar resulting from the combustion of pure tobacco will differ from the composition of tar resulting from the combustion of the same tobacco which has been treated with additional colorants, flavorings, preservatives, or other chemicals.

One single milligram of tar from one cigarette brand may vary in chemical composition from one single milligram of tar from another brand. It is also quite possible that the single milligram of tar in produced by both brands are more toxic than the tar in a third brand which may be as high as 15 milligrams, but composed of less harmful components.

The same chemicals and many others not found in tar can be found in the gaseous phase of the smoke
